Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum)
A subtropical (C4) grass often found in northern or coastal areas of New Zealand.
Identification
Has a deep rooted rhizome system and thick creeping stems which often form a dense mat. The light green leaves are very hairy, particularly the sheath. Ligule is a fringe of distinct hairs.
Characteristics
Its excellent drought resistance makes it a suitable pasture in some areas of Northland, however quality is hard to control and it has poor winter growth. Once established it is very difficult to eradicate.
